- Business Correspondence (part 3)
In the United States of America, it is necessary to make "small talk" in some situations. SMALL TALK is a type of conversation which helps 'break the ice' and fill moments of awkward silence. Students might be shy in these situations, because they have to use their second language. However, it is considered rude to say nothing when a person starts talking to you.
So what do Americans discuss when they don't know each other very well?
Weather (it's a good neutral topic to talk about)
Sports (you can talk about local teams of your favorite teams)
News (whatever is happening in the world or in your area)
- Entertainment (this includes movies, TV shows, books, music, restaurants)
Let's imagine you are waiting for an elevator in a high-rise building. A person standing next to you starts talking to you. He says, "Beautiful day, isn't it?"
What would be your reply? What else would you say?
